The Winchester Building Engineering team is a growing and thriving team developing exceptional links with key clients and architects across Hampshire, Surrey, Sussex, Dorset Berkshire and the Isle of Wight. Current group focus areas include healthcare, science and industry, higher education, commercial and mixed use, repurpose and refurbishment as well as low- and zero-carbon buildings. The diversity of workload and strength of our relationships has meant strong growth over the last three years and a need for some new team members.  

The team have some exciting schemes moving forwards such as Gordon Murray Design Headquarters, the University of Southampton, Southampton General Hospital East Wing Annexe and the West Slope development at the University of Sussex. 

About You 

We are looking for an enthusiastic and dynamic Associate with excellent design, communication, technical, and sustainability skills who enjoys working collaboratively in multi-professional design teams, taking responsibility for projects from inception to completion to achieve outstanding results. 

You will be able to demonstrate solid experience in the field of Mechanical or Electrical Engineering building services, and a track record of multi-disciplinary design. 

You will join a team that seeks to set new standards in the built environment. Challenging orthodoxy will be instinctive to you. You will possess ambition on the Digital front and seek to lead its evolution in the built environment. 

You will be committed to your own professional development and looking for challenging work to develop your engineering skill. 


  • Developing engineering solutions from concept through to completion stage.  
  • Leading the development of appropriate building energy strategies and sustainability strategies for buildings, including communicating and agreeing these plans with the project team members and relevant authorities 
  • Working closely with the architect and other team members in the development of the building form to align with passive design principles, the objectives of the energy and sustainability strategies and the needs of the building services exceeding client expectations. 
  • Supervising and coordinating the work of others and coordinating work with engineers of other disciplines including in-house specialists to ensure production of deliverables to agreed timelines and within budget. 
  • Leading the spatial and technical co-ordination of the building services and their integration into the building design 
  • Maintaining high technical standards consistent with the project brief. 
  • Project leading on multi-professional projects. 
  • Attending meetings and communicating with clients to establish their needs. 
  • Communicating and liaising with clients and managing client meetings as required. 
  • Being an active member of the group work winning team. 
  • Supporting senior management in business and technical development. 
  • Providing technical guidance and mentoring to junior members of the team. 
  • Nurture existing and develop new client relationships in the sector, managing key client relationships to establish and meet their needs. 
  • Being innovative in changing the design of buildings through a deep knowledge of Building Services Engineering. 
  • Project leader on multi-professional projects supervising and coordinating the work of others and coordinating work with engineers of other disciplines. 
  • Become an integral part of the leadership team for Winchester Building Engineering; contributing to strategic decision making and representing the interests of both the Group and Arup more widely. 

In addition, as a Mechanical Associate: 

  • Leading the mechanical team – support the development of Engineers, maintain an overview of mechanical engineering design quality, plan and manage resourcing. 
  • Leading the comfort and thermal analysis of buildings and spaces using modelling software such as IES 
  • Leadership and management of the detailed mechanical design and modelling, reports and specification production. 
  • A good understanding of and ability to apply Building Physics to environmental design of projects. 

In addition, as an Electrical Associate: 

  • Leading the electrical team – support the development of Engineers, maintain an overview of electrical engineering design quality, plan and manage resourcing. 
  • Leading the design of the electrical building systems including design of HV/LV power systems, lighting/emergency lighting, lightning protection & earthing as well as electronic systems including; fire alarm, security systems, PA/VA etc. 
  • Leading the analysis of lighting levels, cable sizing and protection discrimination using modelling software such as Dialux and Amtech. 
  • Project lead on multi-professional projects with high Electrical Engineering content 

Requirements and skills

  • Degree qualified and have achieved professional qualification with an accredited institution. 
  • Post-qualification experience, most of which will be in design gained within a consultancy environment. 
  • Team player. 
  • Organised and adaptable with a flexible approach to work. 
  • Ability to meet strict deadlines. 
  • Excellent communication and report writing skills. 
  • Working knowledge of relevant standards, planning policy, and regulations. 
  • Ability to think outside the specialism and integrate multidisciplinary requirements into holistic coordinated solutions. 
  • Track record of combining specialist input and successful delivery of large projects. 
  • Management of budgets, resourcing and financials are required. 
  • A desire and record of contributing to team and group culture, setting the right environment for people to thrive.
