Tackling climate change is arguably the most difficult challenge humanity has faced and to overcome it will require experts from all disciplines and backgrounds to come together and collaborate.  Arup has made sustainability and the urgent need to transform the energy system to low carbon its most important priority in response to this challenge, through the launch of our climate services plan.  We are already recognised as leading consultants in this field and are working for both public and private sector clients on some of the most important advisory and engineering projects in the UK today.  This includes advice to central and local governments on decarbonisation strategies, managing innovation programmes for low carbon technologies, delivering design solutions for tomorrow's low carbon energy system and providing sustainable investment advice.  Over the next three years we will substantially grow our energy business to meet this challenge and so are looking to recruit across a wide range of skills and grades in all parts of the UK.  Our current portfolio of work is grouped into six key client-facing themes: Offshore Wind, City Decarbonisation, Utility Networks, Nuclear, Hydrogen and Energy+.

The Opportunity 

We currently have an exciting opportunity for an Associate Director to join our established and growing Programme and Project Management team in London.  You will lead a diverse collaborative team with accountability for the successful delivery of a portfolio of commissions in the energy sector, with a strong focus on major project delivery in the nuclear sector.  Our clients include BEIS, the Nuclear Decommissioning Agency, Sellafield, the UKEAE and private sector clients looking to develop new nuclear projects. N.B Arup does not undertake any military-related nuclear work.  We are particularly focused on the early phases of projects and programmes which include the establishment of delivery models that combine public and private sector investment, capability building to step-change organisational delivery capability and establishment of appropriate governance and controls.

The role

The role of an Associate Director is to drive, challenge and successfully deliver complex energy projects and provide advice to clients using best practice PPM knowledge and advisory skills.  Your typical activities will include:

  • Responsible for developing client relationships, generating new work and delivering against business plans.
  • Leading staff recruitment and development. Contributing to networks and teams outside your line of command.
  • Being the accountable project director on complex or high-profile infrastructure projects and programmes that contribute to the UK’s CO2 emissions reduction targets and decarbonisation of the energy system in the nuclear sector.  This includes nuclear waste management as an enabler for new nuclear generation.
  • Ensuring your team delivers commissions to a high standard of quality and client satisfaction.
  • Identifying and mitigating reputational and commercial risks to Arup.
  • Leading the development of new service offerings.

Key qualities we are looking for in candidates include:

Technical Skills and Experience

You will be able to demonstrate your understanding, skill, and experience in the following areas:

  • An interest in working in the Energy sector and extensive transferable or actual Energy sector work experience.  This must include work in the nuclear sector.
  • Building client relationships and generating new work.
  • Delivering results against a business plan.
  • Leading staff recruitment and development. Contributing to networks and teams outside your line of command.
  • Knowledge of project and /or programme management.
  • Management of complex high-risk projects and programmes, including advice related to the establishment of project delivery arrangements and governance.
  • Ability to get things done through others; leading project teams of 10 or more and being responsible for achieving plans and targets set by you for the team.
  • Making effective tactical decisions to achieve strategic objectives. Demonstrating how your contributions made a difference.
  • Assessing real world project scenarios in line with your experience across several key PM dimensions e.g., Governance, Control, Risk, Stakeholders, Finance and Resources.
  • Drawing on ideas from diverse experiences and Project Managing the development or delivery of new client services.
  • The integration of a range of digital tools in PPM delivery and consulting services.

You will also be able to demonstrate one or more of the following:

  • Leading a projects or programmes within a complex governance arrangement.
  • Leading the delivery or development of advisory services for clients
  • Responsible for delivering projects incorporating sustainable development outcomes.

People Skills

You will be able to demonstrate to following people skills:

Technical Skills and Qualifications

  • Minimum of a good first degree in a relevant subject.
  • Chartered professional in a relevant profession.
  • Professional qualifications in Project and Programme Management e.g., AMP PPQ3.
  • Knowledge of the energy sector generally and the nuclear sector specifically.
