The Opportunity

We are looking for an Associate Civil Engineer to guide our established and growing civil engineering sub-team in the South Coast of England. Our team is currently located in Winchester but will move to a new Arup office in Southampton during 2025. 
Our Winchester/Southampton civil engineering and water team forms part of Arup’s Energy, Water and Resources (EWR) group which operates across our London and south east offices. Across this region, our EWR teams consist of approximately 130 engineers and technicians, delivering work in a variety of markets such as Transport, Energy, Water, Industry, Science and Property.

Candidates should have excellent communication, technical, and team management skills and enjoy working collaboratively in multi-professional design teams, taking responsibility for projects from inception to completion, striving for excellence in delivery.
This position is for an Associate level appointment, but there is a clear potential for the right candidate to progress to Associate Director in the future with the anticipated growth of the team and business.

Reporting to the Winchester Civil Engineering and Water Team principal, you will be accountable for: Managing multidisciplinary engineering projects, planning resources and monitoring commercial performance; directing the preparation and review of technical deliverables relevant to civil engineering including drawings, reports, specifications and presentations; Line managing a small group of technical staff (engineers and technicians) as well as guiding on staff recruitment, appraisals, performance development and motivation of staff; Embracing our Culture, Equity and Inclusion strategy and vision, both through your own behaviour and influencing others. 

Your role will Contribute to a culture of technical excellence and the development of technical skills within the wider team through planning and delivery of initiatives and training.  Developing our ambitious growth plans on the South Coast through involvement in business development, building and maintaining client and collaborator networks and proactively seeking opportunities in this area along with winning and delivering new work for the team.


Is this role right for you?

A highly motivated person, you will have achieved Chartered or Incorporated Engineer status of a relevant professional institution (such as ICE or equivalent). Your qualification, skills and experience will include:

  • Qualification in Civil Engineering or similar
  • Strong technical background in one or more areas relevant to civil engineering (earthworks, roads and streets, public realm, utilities, flood risk and drainage) as a core specialism, as well as a wider interest in a complementary aspect of infrastructure development (planning and project management, sustainability, carbon management, infrastructure resilience, etc).
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills, and an ability to interact with clients and other members of the professional team with confidence
  • An ability to manage a complex and varied workload often involving multiple concurrent projects
  • Track record of successful project completion in UK and/or internationally
  • Ability to motivate and lead others
  • Focus on design excellence and a willingness to contribute to continuous quality improvement
