The role

This is an opportunity for an assistant project manager to join project management assignments within our Rail team in Manchester.
The role will provide an opportunity to: 

  • Help develop our PPM capability for Rail clients;
  • Significantly enhance the post-holders own project management and technical skills;
  • Develop best-practice within the team;
  • Identify, support and deliver digital innovations;
  • Adopt best practice PM processes to effectively manage major infrastructure projects; Utilise design and / or PMO background to support multidisciplinary teams;
  • Responsible for implementing project controls and reporting outputs;
  • Input to bidding / winning work activities, initiating projects, formation of project teams to deliver the requirements and ensure overall client satisfaction;
  • Able to demonstrate ability to manage priorities across a variety of demanding client needs.

Assignments are mainly project management focused where we support our Client from business case right through to implementation for large capital projects. Typical roles would include supporting the development of the Project Management Office (PMO) roles and processes in a client environment or supporting a senior project manager in managing major infrastructure projects from project inception to closeout.

The role holder will report to the Project Management team leader within the NW&Y Rail Team. They will be required to be integrated into project delivery teams and work closely with technical discipline leaders, other Arup teams and other consultants/contractors as required.

Requirements and skills

  • Experience of working in a project management team, in either a commercial management, PMO or technical / design management role.
  • Strong experience of data analysis and reporting.
  • Strong interest in adopting new technologies and methods of work to improve existing workflows and processes. We would look favourably on candidates who have an appreciation and / or experience of implementing digital solutions, such as PowerBI and automation tools.
  • Strong planning and organising skills. We would look favourably on candidates with Primavera skills. 
  • Demonstrable ability to work in an integrated project team.
  • Strong logical decision-making skills.
  • Experience of the delivery of infrastructure projects and programmes.
  • Rail domain knowledge (e.g., NR, TfL, DfT, Franchisee, etc.)
  • Good commercial and contractual awareness
  • Ability to identify stakeholders, determine requirements and expectations and manage their influence on the project
