Joining Arup

Arup’s purpose, shared values and collaborative approach has set us apart for over 80 years, guiding how we shape a better world.

The Opportunity

At Arup, you belong to an extraordinary collective – in which we encourage individuality to thrive. Our strength comes from how we respect, share and connect our diverse experiences, perspectives and ideas.

You will have the opportunity to do socially useful work that has meaning – to Arup, to your career, to our members and to the clients and communities we serve.

In this social value and nature services advisory role within our Climate & Sustainability Services team, you will help clients respond to some of the most pressing environmental and social challenges facing society today. We are seeking an Assistant Consultant to join our Leeds-based team, working with colleagues in our offices across the North and Scotland. This is an excellent opportunity for a professional looking to develop consulting skills in sustainability, nature recovery and social value across a diverse portfolio of UK projects.

You will support the delivery of sustainability advisory projects, with a particular focus on social value, nature, biodiversity, and wider environmental and social outcomes. Working alongside experienced consultants and multidisciplinary teams, you will contribute to projects across sectors including infrastructure, technology, transport, energy, and local government. The role offers the opportunity to develop technical expertise, project management skills and client-facing experience while contributing to meaningful outcomes for communities and the environment.

In this role you will:

  • Support the delivery of social value assessments, strategies, and reporting, and assist in developing measurement frameworks and monitoring approaches.
  • Contribute to nature-based, biodiversity and wider environmental, social, and governance (ESG) projects, including research, analysis, stakeholder engagement, and reporting.
  • Undertake quantitative and qualitative research, data analysis, and benchmarking, and prepare technical reports, presentations, and client-facing materials.
  • Assist with stakeholder engagement activities, workshops, and consultations, and collaborate with colleagues across Arup disciplines to develop integrated sustainability solutions.
  • Support business development activities, including proposal writing, market research, and opportunity tracking.
  • Keep up to date with emerging policy, legislation, guidance, and best practice relating to sustainability, social value, and nature.

Is this role right for you?

We'd like to hear from you if you have:

  • A degree or Masters in sustainability, ecology, geography, social sciences, environmental management, planning, economics, or a related discipline.
  • Strong interest in sustainability, social value, nature recovery, biodiversity, and sustainable development.
  • Experience through an early career role, internships, placements, academic projects, or voluntary work related to sustainability, social value, ecology, community engagement, or environmental assessment.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with strong analytical and research capabilities.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams, with good organisational skills and attention to detail.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, particularly Excel, PowerPoint, and Word, and a commitment to continuing professional development.

Desirable:

  • Relevant postgraduate qualification.
  • Experience analysing and presenting data.
  • Membership of, or interest in joining, a relevant professional institution.
