The Opportunity
We are looking for a Part 2 Architectural Assistant with a passion for historic buildings.
The role will see you working within our Heritage & Conservation Architecture team alongside specialists in design and conservation for listed buildings. We are a team of eight, based between London and York, and are part of a larger network in Arup including archaeologists and conservation-accredited engineers.
Ours is not a standard conservation architecture practice. Our skills and experience span all RIBA stages, from heritage assessments to architectural design and delivery on site. We value variety and breadth of experience, and you will be involved in activities across that spectrum.
Arup works on high-profile projects with significant technical complexity and a focus on sustainability and holistic thinking. Within that context we provide a solid core of heritage skills and leadership.
We have a highly varied portfolio of project types, including some of the most famous buildings in the country (Houses of Parliament, York Minster, Blackpool Tower, and more). We manage our own projects and contribute to large multi-disciplinary teams.

Is this role right for you?
We’re looking for a candidate in early stages of their career in the heritage sector with:
- A RIBA Part 2 architectural qualification
- A solid portfolio which includes evidence of an interest in historic buildings, architectural history, traditional materials and details
- Architectural conservation, ideally including exposure to assessing the ‘appropriateness’ of different materials and interventions in line with national and international good practice
- Excellent, demonstrable skills in written English
- Demonstrable skill in writing complex, visual, user-friendly documents, including illustrated reports (in InDesign)
- Demonstrable skills in design, problem-solving and visual communication, including architectural drawing
- Fluency in hand-drawing and software including AutoCAD and Revit
